VIC SELF | ASSISTANT COACH
Self is a longtime familiar face to basketball among the South Plains. He spent 25 years coaching basketball at Lubbock's Monterey High School and 20 spent as the head coach of the Plainsmen boy's basketball team. Self is no stranger to LCU. The Portales, New Mexico native lettered in basketball and tennis at Lubbock Christian in 1980-1981, after spending two years at Eastern New Mexico University. His first coaching job was as an assistant coach for John Copeland on the Chaps basketball staff. In two decades at Monterey, Self compiled a 416-237 record, four district titles and 13 playoff appearances. Monterey even made a trip to the regional tournament. He rejoins Gomez, but in a reversal of roles. Gomez served as an assistant for Self from 1988-1996. Self resigned from coaching basketball in 2008, but continued to coach boy's golf at Monterey until retiring in 2011.
